Dec 15, 2008

PI Math LeagueThe inauguration of the the PI Annual Math League Tournament took place on December 15th, 2008, and was hosted at the Petroleum Institute. The event was a great success, and everybody enjoyed themselves. Taking part were forty-four students from the Glenelg School in Abu Dhabi. Twenty-one female students contested for prizes at the Arzanah campus, whilst simultaneously, twenty-three male contestants entered into mathematical combat at the PI’s male campus.

Initially, the participants competed as individuals in a one hour event, applying their math talents to solving 25 written problems. The contestants then split up into competing groups to tackle a further set of challenging problems. This second part of the tournament proved to be exciting for both students and the competition’s audience! All the questions posed in the tournament were specifically designed to stretch the mathematical insight of the contestants, and required a high level of ingenuity. At the close of the contest, the participants commented that they found the tasks challenging, but interesting at the same time.
